ADEM Red Tags: How Alabama Stops Fuel Deliveries to Non-Compliant Tanks

The strongest enforcement tool in the UST world is not a fine — it is the delivery prohibition. A red-tagged fill pipe means no fuel distributor can legally drop product into your tank until the violation clears. For a station, that is a closure notice wearing a compliance costume.

What triggers a red tag

Significant violations: missing or failed release detection, failed spill/overfill testing, expired financial responsibility, or ignoring a notice of violation. Distributors check tags because their own licenses are on the line for delivering to a tagged tank.

The clearing process

Fix the violation, document it — usually with a passing test from a qualified tester — and submit to ADEM for clearance. The gap between “fixed” and “cleared” is where stations lose days of revenue, which is why our violation work includes same-cycle report delivery.

The cheaper version

Every red tag we have ever seen traces back to a missed calendar, not a mystery failure. A testing vendor who owns your deadline calendar costs a fraction of one day of lost fuel sales.
